Guess

What these good Catholic priests, nuns and people are doing?

These are the faithful in Korea.

A candlelight procession in honour of Our Lord or the Blessed Virgin?

Go on, guess what this is.

Actually, .... :

Roman Catholic priests participate in a special service as part of protest against South Korean government's policy toward U.S. beef imports in Seoul, South Korea, Monday, June 30, 2008. South Korean police on Monday raided the offices of civic groups that have led weeks of protests against a government plan to resume U.S. beef imports. The letters read ' Resignation of President Lee Myung-bak'.

Plant Clearance Sale!

  • Jul. 7th, 2008 at 8:51 AM
Netherlandbulb.com is having a plant clearance sale. (Just google Netherlandbulb.com.) They are a wholesale nursery which usually caters to the professional landscapers but they do open their clearance sales to home gardeneres a few times a year. I have ordered from them before and can vouch for the quality of what they sell.
They have some really good bargains listed right now--including blueberry plants, lilies, cannas etc. I just thought you aught to know. Perhaps this will help someone.

Swiss Buttercream Success

  • Jul. 7th, 2008 at 6:55 AM
must admit, after reading on Smitten Kitchen the trials and tribulations of Swiss Buttercream .. I was a little anxious ( in a bad way ) to try it ...

Luckily after reading the recipe posted earlier today on bake bake bake , I decided to give it a go ..

I have to say its NOT what I expected , more like a filling if you ask me than a frosting , I think next time I want to find a way to infuse fresh raspberry into it and fill a cupcake .... but all in all a success...

Heres another pic, and a recipe.... )

My seal, let me show it to you:

And while we have your attention, this notice just arrived from city kitties:

West Philadelphia--

City Kitties really needs your help! We have two adult females (Tastycake and Shorty) who need foster homes without other cats ASAP. Both girls are young, sweet, and make great companions, but they're stressed out with other cats around and we have to move them. We also have an FIV+ lovebug, Seven, who needs a cat-free foster home. If you think you could provide a home to one of these sweet kitties, please let us know!

Also, please consider adopting Pickle (male, white with orange spots, 4-5 months) or Orwell (female, tuxedo, approx. 3 months) if you're interested in a kitten. We have no idea why someone hasn't adopted them yet! If you need a companion for your dog or cat, Pickle is your guy. Orwell would do really well in a home with another kitty, too.

Any questions, email us at info at citykitties dot org

MOLD MOLD MOLD (ps I hate you midwest)

  • Jul. 7th, 2008 at 6:52 AM
My brother housesat for us while we were out of town for the 4th of July....
Our basement flooded and they cleaned the carpets with an EXTREMELY mild bleach solution.
Mild enough that all it probably did was rewet the carpet......
Is there any alternative to pulling the carpet back to bleach the floor underneath?  I would really like to avoid that thought.
It's obvious there is mold (smell) and I would love to get rid of it quick!  Suggestions?

A question.  Are there any here that are from Glasgow or know the city well?  I´m going there for a weekend trip in a couple of weeks and would like to find a petstore somewhere in central Glasgow.  You know how it is, you can´t take a trip somewhere without buying something for your kids.

I got bored today, so I made this sponge cake topped with lime whipped cream and raspberries. The sponge cake could definitely have been better because I totally failed at folding in the flour so there were lumps randomly scattered about (hence the lack of naked cake pictures), but the texture wasn't as dense and stomach-punching as the last one, so it's an improvement XD I used the hot milk sponge recipe here for the base, but I guess it's not so much a sponge since it's got butter in it.

The cake got brushed with lime syrup (1/4 cup sugar and water and the juice from half a lime) on both sides. Half the raspberries were macerated with just sugar and the other half with sugar and gin (because what goes better with lime?) I also threw in a tbsp of lime juice into whipped cream to make the lime whipped cream. Sorry for the poor "decorating" as I just cut squares and stacked them up with the other ingredients in my haste to eat it XD

Next time, if I can get the sponge cake to turn out all right, I might attempt to make this as a roulade!

Giant cupcake pan

  • Jul. 6th, 2008 at 6:42 PM
So, I have seen the beautiful photos of the cakes make by the Wilton Giant Cupcake Pan and I was super curious! I have been looking everywhere for one! Ebay has a few, but I feel they get pretty pricey. I went to my local A.C. Moore because everything there is on sale, but I had no luck. I saw a sign on the side of the road (lol) that Linens N Things are going out of business so I decided to go there. Everything is about 25-60% off. I went in and to my surprise, I FOUND THE GIANT CUPCAKE PAN! I am so anxious to use this, but the best part about it...I only paid about $22 with taxes!!!! I was delighted!! So I am just posting to let you guys know if you have one around you and you want the pan, they [should] have them there. I live in West Palm Beach, FL and the one I went to had about ten! Happy giant-pan findings! =)
